Kuching Central road upgrading complete despite protest from DAP

Spring is definitely coming to Kuching Central early this year, and the auspicious occasion of the CNY is being greeted earlier with cheers from shops owners and customers alike; as the surrounding area has been tar sealed with a new surface to greed “The Year of the Golden Tiger.”

Today early morning, everyone has been greeted with a breath of fresh air from the area, as the area received not only a new tar sealed surface but also an additional about 100 extra parking bay to the convenient of the customers and to ease the congestion problem faced by the local people.

The shop owners living in these areas are very happy that Kuching Central is receiving a timely up grading work from DBKU, the City Council North.

Many said it’s a sign that this year will be a very prosperous year, as they are receiving a great “Ang Pow” to start off a Golden Tiger Year with new Road surfaces and extra parking lots to cater for an ever growing need from the loyal customers.

The Kuching Central Community Association and the local people sincerely took the opportunity to thank DBKU (the City Council North), the “experienced” Contractor, SUPP Kuching Branch; especially the KCH Branch’s Ahli Dewan DBKU Mr Peter Pui for a speedy and timely work which took only 7 days to complete without any untold incident such as road block and congestion.

On the other hand, it’s the full commitment and cooperation of all the Shop Owners, DBKU, The Contractor, the Community Leaders and the patient and understanding of the Road users which has enable the work to be carried out smoothly and completed at a record time.

The newly resurfaced road will definitely complement the “Promenade” which is the new extension to the existing Kuching Water Front by early March 2010.

Lastly, I praised the maturity thinking of the people here for now listening to the rumors and negative remarks made from certain quarters who is trying to derail the project and our sincerity to redevelop this area.

Furthermore, I hope people would go through the proper channel to seek for help and assistant, especially from DBKU and the relevant authorities to try and solve their problem faced in our ever growing society.

I hereby wishes everyone an early Spring and early CNY and may this auspicious “Golden Year of the Tiger” brings Good Luck, Good Health, and Prosperous always.

Congratulation to all concerned for a job well done. However I have been wondering for years why resurfacing work can’t be carried out during the evening, through the nite till early morning to avoid the peak traffic hours? I first noticed this was been done in a neighbouring country which I first visited more than 30 years ago and I thought that’s very logical indeed.
Another thing I don’t understand is why can’t parking lot be slanted at an angle whereby you can easily drive in to park, rather that have it at 90 degree perpendicular to the road ? Dosen’t make any sense to me at all . .

Geoff, TQ for your words of encouragement. I would like to personally answer your question as it sound sincere enough …
First of all, my first major project at DBKU was coincidently also road resurfacing work and it was at Cerpenter St back in 2008.
The project took about a week to finished as we had encountered many problems, ranging from complains from the local residents for being too noisy, cars owers refused to park their cars somewhere else for fear of theaf and most of all, our street lightings are not bright enough for the contractors to do a good job (as the uneven surface it’s still visible).
The next answer to your next question is quite simple … Kuching Central area is not having sufficiant car park, and take Gambier St for instance, the 90 degree parking bay will have a maximum of 21/3 Cars per shop lot, while a horizontal parking bay will have only 11/3 Car space … therefore, if we want to maximized the area provided, then the 90 degree perpendicular parking lot is the better choice as we will be able to provide more parking spaces for Gambier Road and India St customers.
Lastly, with the cooperation of the Kuching Central Community Association and DBKU, the area will received an additional more then 100 new parking bay for the convenient of the customers when the newly extended Water Front is finished by early March 2010.

peter, TQ for your reply. However, the issue is not how much you parking lot you can squeeze into a given area but rather how egornomic or user friendly is the configuration. Practicality that that minimizes hindrance to the flow of traffic should also be considered, and it’s also most common sensical rather than more economical. It should be “Form” follows function rather than economy, don’t you think so?
For resurfacing of road during evening the lighting should not be an issue as during PQ of contractors you can filter and select those who are qualified and equipped accordingly to do the job as specified. TQ

its great to see the intellectual discourse. knowing how brutal that area, am presume no matter how many parking lots will not be an issue. people will continue to double or triple park during peak hours and will only be civilised when the traffic police doing their round!
